As part of our commitment to have the entire yogitoes yoga line made from recycled materials, to help our planet, rNaked Yoga Mat and rMat are made of 100% natural rubber, 25% recycled rubber, and free of heavy metals, phthalates and PVC. Designed for zero waste, the mats are 100% biodegradable.
Therein lays the glitch. For non-heated practice, many yogis and well-known teachers love the grip factor, feel and eco-consciousness of rNaked Mat and rMat. However, the mat is not ideally-suited to all conditions and practitioners. Composting is the biological decomposition of organic matter under controlled conditions, namely heat and moisture, to create nutritious topsoil. Hot yoga simulates these conditions, and causes our yoga mats to break down quickly. If one is looking to create a vibrant garden, our mats may be of help.
We regret that our initial product testing did not reveal this, and have a process in place to issue a full credit for any mats that have broken down. If you have experienced this, please contact our customer solutions team.
A. Sometimes the mat may feel a little slick before it is broken in. To break in, dilute either dishwashing soap or white vinegar with water and wipe your mat with it using a slightly abrasive sponge or cloth. Use liquid sparingly -- a small amount will do the trick. Your mat will also naturally break in with use.
A: We use dyes that are heavy metal/azo/lead free because they are better for the health of factory employees, practitioners, and our earth. With simple product care, dye-bleeding problems can be avoided.
A: Wash separately before using – because we use dyes that are heavy metal/azo/lead free and much better for the planet, dyes may bleed. Machine wash cold with like colors – deeper colors may require multiple washings to remove excess dye. Tumble-dry low (or try hang drying to be extra energy efficient)!
Optimum results are obtained when avoiding the use of fabric softeners, dryer sheets and detergents with fabric softeners.
A: Here are some tips that will allow you to maximize the potential of your Skidless and enjoy a deeper practice:
Care for Skidless that can interfere with grip:
Fabric softeners, dryer sheets and detergents with fabric softeners deposit residue that makes garments feel nice, but can also make your Skidless feel slick and slippery. If this happens, try using a sports wash (such as Penguin Sport Wash) to remove the residue, and restore the special performance aspects Skidless intends.
Individual sweat tendencies:
- Some yogis sweat immediately during class so the area under the hands/feet become moist and maximum grip is obtained right away. Often these yogis benefit most from placing Skidless across the entire length of the mat at the beginning of class.
- Others take a while to work up a sweat. For these practitioners, the Skidless towel can be conveniently placed at the top of the mat and as they begin to sweat, it can be partially unrolled to place under the hands and continue to be unrolled as they go.
- Finally, some yogis choose to moisten the area under the hand/feet before class begins, as this seems to work best for their individual practice.
Body adjustments that can help prevent slipping:
Often when we direct muscular effort and pressure outward away from us (for example pushing our hands and feet out and away from us in downward dog), we have more of a tendency to slip. When pressure and energy are drawn up towards the center of the body, we tend to slip less.
- Spreading the fingers wide and pressing down evenly throughout the hands and/or feet will help create a firm foundation for poses.
- Engaging the core and strongly drawing the arm or leg muscles firmly toward the center of the body help to steady active poses.
- If you find stability in downward dog challenging, check to see if you are flaring your ribs and armpits down towards the mat (hyper-extending your shoulders) – this will not only contribute to forward pressure (encouraging slipping), but put excess pressure on the joints. Try softening the low ribs into the body, release the shoulder blades down the back away from the ears, and while keeping the arms strong, externally rotate the upper arm in the shoulder socket (the triceps will roll down toward the mat). Finally, draw your thigh muscles up (kneecaps lift towards the hips). This encourages even weight distribution between the front and back of the body. These actions help draw energy up the arms and legs as opposed to forward and down into the mat, and as strength and flexibility are developed, your downward-dog will become more solid and sturdy.

A: No. There is no universal standard size for a yoga mat, although our Mat-Size Skidless will match the edges of most yoga mats pretty closely. Your practice will not be affected if the sides of your Skidless are a little wider or narrower than your mat.
A: The Skidless dot pattern is intended to be placed dot-side down on your yoga mat (though some yogis get creative and practice dot-side up).
A: Depending on the type of yoga you practice, we recommended washing your Skidless after every 1 or 2 uses. (For sweaty practices, it is best to wash Skidless after every use.) If you choose not to wash your Skidless between uses, be sure to air out any moisture that has been absorbed
A: The dot or other symbol at the top of your mat or Skidless towel serves as your drishti or “gazing point”. (In Sanskrit, drishti means sight.) Directing your gaze towards this point helps with balance, focus, and guides one’s attention inward.
A: There are different benefits that come with using each size, in addition to their shared benefit of adding comfort and stability to your practice. The Mat-Size Skidless will provide a non-slip surface that covers your entire mat. The Hand-Size Skidless can be used to cover just selected areas of the mat, such as under the hands in downward dog or under the torso when lying on the back. Additionally, Hand-Size Skidless can be used to keep from slipping in arm balances – try draping over the arms in crow pose or across the front leg in twisting crescent pose. Hand-Size Skidless is also a great gym companion as it serves as a super-absorbent, hygienic layer that doesn’t slide off fitness equipment.
A: Our unique Skidless patented design has found itself beneficial in many places other than the asana room. Try using your Skidless as a seat liner for the back seat of your car (our dogs love them!), to open pickle jars, or hang a Hand-Size over exercise equipment while in the gym or Pilates class for a steadier, hygienic grip.
